The clumsy dialogue and prose in Herbert’s writings I believe are an artifact of the typewriter. Had he been able to edit digitally it would have been a most different book.
The prose does achieve moments of brilliance, especially in book 2. "Drunk on too much time," "My name is a killing word," etc.
It's definitely true that people writing nowadays have it a lot easier. And as Dave says, there are some great lines.
